Keswick Trip & My Birthday | January

For a few years now it has been a tradition of ours to have a week away around the time of my birthday. With Christmas and New Year over, January can be a pretty depressing month. But booking a little relaxing break is the perfect solution. We adore the Lake District, even in in grey and gloomy January, it's beauty can't be dulled.  Last year we discovered the newly opened Keswick Reach Lodge Retreat and took advantage of their new opening prices and booked a week for my birthday. We adore Keswick and absolutely fell in love with the luxurious lodges of Keswick Reach. So much so that we booked it again for my birthday this year and I've no doubt will be doing the same again for years to come.

The location of the lodge park is absolutely ideal. Keswick and Cockermouth are just a short drive away and we can easily access Penrith and some of our favourite lakes and fells in the Lake District from here. Some lodges are dog friendly which is ideal for us and our little fur baby Charlie. There is a restaurant, Copper Fells and Ammara Spa on site, which we are still yet to get round to visiting! So I  can't comment but have heard great things. There is also dog washing facility which is ideal after those long muddy adventures in the Lakes!

Everything about the Walpole Premier is just so welcoming and relaxing. The decor is modern and cosy, and the huge windows bring so much light in to the living space. You really can't help but feel full of calm and happiness, padding around the place in fluffy socks and a giant cosy jumper. We started every morning with breakfast on the dining table, looking out at the geese on the pond and planning an adventure for the day ahead. What a way to start the day, full of good food, warm tea and totally at peace!

One of my favourite things about this lodge (ha, everything is my favourite) is the bedroom / bathroom area. It's pretty quite open plan and feels pretty luxurious and relaxing! There's his and hers sinks, a giant bath tub, and the best shower ever which I desperately want in my own home. I always bring my favourite Lush bath bombs, various face masks and enjoy a properly good pamper session, which I of course rope the boyfriend in to too! The wooden beams, the lovely decor and modern fixtures make you feel at your prime level of comfort and relaxation! Not to mention the outdoor hot tub, which of course adds to that completely relaxing experience. Coming back from a day of exploring the Lake District and scrambling up fells to enjoy an evening in the hot tub with a glass of something bubbly... ahh, dreamy.

We arrived on the Monday and I spent the first hour running around the place jumping with pure joy, while Gareth very kindly stayed calm and brought in our cases and food shopping from the car. Whoops. We unpacked all our belongings to the various cupboards and drawers and made ourselves properly at home. We baked a camembert,  lit the fire, poured some champagne and had the most relaxing evening we'd had in a months!

The next morning, after a hearty breakfast, we wrapped up and set off to Buttermere, one of the few lakes in the area that we hadn't yet managed to visit. We got super lucky with the weather, and walked for a fair few hours with the sun shining down on us! I mean, it was cold, but it wasn't raining or windy so what more can you ask for in the middle of January?! We stopped for a packed lunch half way round and in total I think it took us just over 3 hours to walk from the village, around the lake and back to the car.

That evening we went drove in to Keswick and headed to a restaurant we'd been eyeing up on Tripadvisor, Bar eS. Mexican style tapas plates, an assortment of gins, craft beer and dog friendly... if some one asked me what to describe my ideal place to eat, this would be it! The cosy little bar provides the exact kind of chilled out vibe you would want to enjoy your Mexican feast. As we got to the bar a couple local to the area arriving at the same time told is it's the best food in Keswick and we weren't disappointed! We ordered 5 dishes to share between us and they came out as and when they were ready. I adore mexican food served in this style and oh wow.. this has to be some of the best I've ever had! We sipped our drinks and chatted over the food and the dog got plenty of fussing from the other guests in the bar. Before we'd even finished we had already agreed that we'd be coming back.

On the Wednesday we opted for a pretty chilled out day, we had a little stroll around the centre of Keswick and stopped for a sandwhich and a coffee in a cafe. We spent the rest of the afternoon in our cosiest jumpers hanging around the lodge, reading books and eating biscuits. That evening we'd booked a tour around The Lakes Distillery where they make whiskey, gin and vodka. It was super interesting to see how it's all done and of course the tasting at the end was my favourite part! We left with a warm fuzzy feeling and a bottle of their gin from the gift shop. All in all, a success!

For our last day we headed to the small village of Braithwaite and took on Barrow Fell. Having already done Cat Bells on our last trip to Keswick, we were looking for something a little less popular but just as fun. The weather throughout our whole trip had been bright and sunny, cold, but sunny. Typically on the one day we decide to climb a massive hill and check out some sprawling views, the clear skies disappeared and fog descended. The fell walk was so much fun though, there are quite a few 'false summits' so just when you think you're about to reach the top, you get there and discover it that the next climb appears to be the summit. This happens a good few times, and each one felt like a little victory. The higher we get the heavier the fog seemed to get. It was kinda creepy and we didn't cross paths with a single other person the whole 3+ hours we were walking. We felt like the only people in the world and it was strangely relaxing. Also, yes that is my dog in a waterproof onesie, it was a heaven send on this whole trip! I was so grateful not having to bathe him and dry his mass amounts of fluff after every single walk!

We spent out last night (sad times) enjoying our beautiful lodge for the last time. Gareth cooked carbonara and then we sampled our gin from the distillery and enjoyed an evening in the hot tub staring up at the stars and talking about how lucky we both felt.

One again, Keswick treated us well and we had the dreamiest of times at Keswick Reach. I always come back from the Lake District feel so refreshed and renewed. For me the Lakes is my favourite place in the world and nowhere makes my heart feel happier. It's beauty never fails to impress and the freedom of the sprawling hills and lakes reminds me how much potential there is in life. I feel reunited with the magic I used to see in the world as a child, and that does wonders for the soul.
