The Mani Mask - Barry M | Beauty Review

I gel my nails... all the time. I know, I know, it's not good for them! But, like that god damn Krispy Kreme counter they've opened up near my house that I should also be avoiding, I can't resist. I love gel nails. I've recently started doing my own and not only am I enjoying learning to do it, I also love the fact that I can have pretty nails for a few weeks and not have to worry about them. Because I do, I worry about my nails. From quite an early age I've hated having bare naked nails. It's just one of those things that I have to maintain. I can leave the house having not brushed my hair or bothered with make up (soz) but if I've not done anything with my nails and they're all exposed... no. Actually, my boyfriend says he can judge my mood on my nails. Basically, neglected, chipped and bitten nails mean something is up. Who needs a mood ring eh?

I've completely come away from my point here. Basically what I'm trying to say is that I gel my nails more than is healthy for them. So as soon as I've removed my latest overlay, I like to slather my nails in treatments to apologise for putting them through such an ordeal, and then I give them a little holiday for a bit. But like I said, I hate leaving my nails bare. I recently picked up the Barry M Mani Mask in Birthday Suit and thought it sounded perfect for popping on between gels, without worrying about having my full on naked nails out.

The Mani Mask is described by Barry M as 'the perfect pamper party for your nails. Formulated to Camouflage, Colour & Condition, for a semi-matte finish that cares for nails while helping them look great too!

The shade Birthday Suit is actually a really close match to the pinky nude flesh colour of my natural nails, just a little lighter. It's a subtle shade that won't draw attention but adds a flush of colour and just smartens everything up a little.

The product applies quite thinly and definitely doesn't create an opaque coverage. I personally apply two coats, sometimes three depending on how opaque I'm wanting it to go. It dried down more matte than I expected. Yes it's described as 'semi-matte' and while it remains a little sheer and doesn't have the thick coverage I've come to expect of 'matte' products it certainly dries down without any gloss or shine, which I actually really liked. It just adds to the subtle and natural look of the polish and I guess this is where the 'camouflage' bit of the description comes in. That said, I do like to add a clear top coat to for a glossy layer if I'm not feeling the matte look that day.

In terms of what this product is doing to inject some health back in to my nails, I'd have to give a little shrug of my shoulders and make a non-committal sound like 'mmm'. After I've removed my gels, my natural nails can be a bit thin and dry. After wearing the mani mask for roughly a week, my nails do feel a little happier and conditioned, but not enough to have me jumping up and down about it. Although honestly, that's not what I expected from this product and nor do I think that is it's intention. It was never going to replace any hardcore nail care. But after I've slathered on all the oils and ointments, this mask is a perfect way to round up my nail care routine and keep me from getting the naked nail fear and running back to the gels too soon. I'm definitely going to be grabbing the other shades and I just know that the Mani Mask is going to become a step of my constantly ongoing nail routine that I just can't be without.

Have you tried any of the Mani Masks yet? What do you think?

I'm intrigued by this product. Like you, I just cannot go without having my nails done, so it's great that there's something like this in the market that can inject a bit of life into your nails.
